St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) - Wednesday, April 24, 2002

Perry Atkins, an educator with the Ferguson-Florissant School District for more than 40 years, died Sunday (April 21, 2002) of a heart attack at his home in Florissant. He was 70.

A native of Indian Mound, Tenn., Mr. Atkins received his bachelor's degree from Austin Peay State College (now Austin Peay State University) in Clarksville, Tenn., in 1956, and a master's degree in 1972 from Webster University.

Mr. Atkins served as a sergeant first class in the Korean War.

In 1954, he and Earlene Tyson Atkins were married in Hopkinsville, Ky.

Mr. Atkins began his teaching career in 1957 at Lee Hamilton Elementary School in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. He later became a science coordinator for the district. He retired in 1988 but worked for 12 more years as a data analyst for the district.

In addition to his wife, among the survivors are three sons, Kenneth Atkins, David Atkins and Eric Atkins, all of Florissant; a brother, Ira Atkins of Dover, Tenn.; and two sisters, Violet Hargreaves of Knoxville, Tenn., and Iris Heflin of Big Rock, Tenn.

Thank you, Martha!  We should invite his family to the reunion.  He was a much loved teacher!

The article is on microfilm at Webster's library so the next time I'm on campus I could see if I can get a printout of the page.

Mr. Atkins was my favorite!
